Structural Steel Shop Foreman

Steel Shop Foreman manages daily operations, workflow, and personnel in a structural or miscellaneous steel fabrication shop to ensure projects are finished safely, accurately, and on schedule.  
Core Responsibilities
  • Supervision & Leadership: Direct, train, and mentor shop personnel, including welders, fitters, and machine operators. Assign daily tasks to keep production moving efficiently.
  • Blueprint & Drawing Interpretation: Read and analyze complex shop drawings, blueprints, cut lists, and project plans to ensure precise fabrication.  
  • Quality & Safety Control: Inspect finished work and welds for dimensional accuracy and adherence to industry standards (such as AWS or OSHA guidelines). Enforce a safe and clean work environment.
  • Production & Scheduling: Coordinate daily workflow, monitor project deadlines, and collaborate with project managers, purchasing, and logistics.  
  • Resource & Equipment Management: Monitor inventory levels for raw metals and supplies, oversee tool maintenance, and report equipment repair needs.  
Key Requirements & Qualifications
  • Industry Experience: Typically 3 to 5+ years of hands-on experience in structural or miscellaneous steel fabrication.
  • Leadership Skills: Previous supervisory or foreman experience running a crew.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong background in welding processes (GMAW, FCAW, etc.), metal cutting/forming equipment, and reading technical schematics.
  • Physical & Practical Skills: Ability to perform basic math calculations, read measuring tools accurately, and lift heavy materials (often up to 50 lbs).  
  • Software Skills: Familiar with any of  Fabtrol, Fabsuite, Tekla PowerFab, BlueBeam
