They test fit-ups, visually inspect welds, check dimensions, and sign off on paperwork before parts leave the shop.

- Weld Inspection: Check welds for correct size, length, and visual flaws (like cracks or undercut) using specific tools.
- Dimensional Checks: Measure steel assemblies, bolt holes, and fit-ups with tape measures, squares, and calipers to meet AISC tolerances.
- Code Compliance: Follow welding procedure specifications (WPS) and verify that individual welder credentials are up to date.
- Documentation: Fill out inspection reports, track non-conformance issues, and maintain material traceability records.
- Shop Coordination: Work with fitters, welders, and shop managers to fix problems early.
- Certification: Active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
- Experience: 3 to 5+ years working in a structural steel fabrication shop.
- Reading Blueprints: Strong skill in reading complex structural drawings, shop details, and weld symbols.
- Code Knowledge: Deep understanding of standards like AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code – Steel).
- Extra Skills: Level II NDT certifications (such as PT or MT) are often preferred.
